Powhatan's instrumental music program has a distinguished reputation as a 5-time VA Honor Band, Blue Ribbon School for Music Education, and a 5-time honoree in the Best Communities for Music Education, one of only 20 in Virginia.

The high school program includes:

Wind Symphony
Symphonic Band
Symphony Orchestra
String Orchestra
Jazz Ensemble
Percussion Ensembles
Indoor Drumline

The middle school program offers grade-level instruction in Band and Orchestra, serving over 1/3 of the entire student population.
